About our products
What is vetkoek?
Vetkoek (pronounced "fet-kook") is a traditional South African fried bread that's golden and crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. It's also known as magwinya, fat cake, and is similar to what other countries call puff puff, dumplings or bakes. Enjoy it plain or with savoury fillings like curried mince or creamy chicken, or satisfy your sweet tooth with jam, syrup or chocolate spread.
Are your recipes authentic?
Yes. These are the same recipes we've proudly served through Cooked & Ate, now blended and packed in small batches so you can recreate the same authentic South African flavours at home.
Why choose Cooked & Ate Vetkoek Mix?
We've taken the guesswork out of making homemade vetkoek. There's no need to measure flour, yeast, sugar or salt, we've done it for you. Simply add water, allow the dough to rise and fry for homemade vetkoek every time.
What do I need to make the Vetkoek Mix?
Just lukewarm water and cooking oil for frying. Every Vetkoek Mix includes a separate yeast sachet, so there's nothing else to buy.
How many vetkoeks does one mix make?
Each pouch makes approximately 10–12 medium-sized vetkoeks, depending on how large you shape them.
I've never made vetkoek before. Is it difficult?
Not at all. Our mixes are designed for beginners as well as experienced cooks. Every pack includes simple step-by-step instructions, making it easy to achieve great results the very first time.

Storage & cooking
How should I store the mixes?
Store unopened pouches in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. There's no need to refrigerate.
Every pouch includes a Best Before date.
Can I freeze cooked vetkoek?
Yes. Allow them to cool completely before freezing in an airtight container or freezer bag. Reheat in an oven or air fryer until piping hot.
Can I bake the vetkoek instead of frying it?
Traditional vetkoek is fried, giving it its signature golden crust and fluffy centre. Baking will produce a different texture, so for the most authentic South African experience we recommend frying.
